Course structure

With our six-months' individual tuition in our training course, we offer optimal conditions for a sustainable exam preparation. Thanks to the considerable time available, we can help your child close individual gaps in a targeted manner, while providing comprehensive training on topics relevant to the exam.

The preparation course for the Gymnasium entrance examination has 3 phases:
1
Phase 1 (Basics): Filling Gaps
At the beginning of the course, we carry out a comprehensive assessment of your child's situation so that we can see where your child stands and what gaps may still exist. We will recap important basics from 5th primary grade in quick succession. Those will be studied in depth according to individual needs. We mainly consolidate and train basics and topics that are relevant to the exam.
2
Phase 2 (Structure): Acquiring and enhancing the examination material
Topics from 6th primary grade in German (including essay writing) and maths are improved and practiced intensively. If certain topics were not covered in school or were only covered superficially, this phase also offers space to work through gaps from 6th grade.
3
Phase 3 (Recap): Applying the material based on exam questions
We provide targeted training of specific exam questions in German (language studies & essay) and maths: Which types of questions and steps to the solution are there? What is the best way to approach the various exam questions? This includes exam strategies and, depending on requirements, a targeted recap of specific topics.
In phase 3, we will also prepare a mock exam that simulates the real Gymnasium entrance exam. Here, your child can gain important experience in dealing with examination situations and learn valuable lessons (e.g. time management, examination stress, focus, examination strategies, etc.). Afterwards, the students receive comprehensive feedback and can thus identify the topics that they should practice and recap.

Quality courses and individual support for your child
Qualified and trained teachers with a high level of professional expertise
We specialize in supporting students on their way to Gymnasium. Our teachers are highly motivated and qualified in the latest teaching materials and curricula. We set high quality standards and we only employ a select group of teachers who fully meet our standards.
Comprehensive training materials and a digital course platform
We create our training materials as practical dossiers on specific topics in accordance with the latest examination requirements. We support your child every step of the way through the training materials. Your child will also receive personal access to our modern course platform. Here, students can find additional multimedia materials that are tailored to their individual needs, such as educational videos, digital flashcards, quizzes, and much more. This ensures an optimal and effective training during and after class hours. All materials are included in the course fee.
      Support after class hours
Our aim is to ensure that your child is optimally supported. If our students have any questions, they can always reach out to their teachers via chat – even after class hours. In addition to class days, we offer weekly video sessions for questions and, if necessary, video tutoring so that your child can close any gaps early on. It goes without saying that these services are included in the course price.
      Extensive situation assessment
At the start of our preparation course, our experts conduct an independent assessment of your child's situation. Your child receives comprehensive feedback on any gaps and individual improvement opportunities. This is an important basis and early orientation for the remaining preparation time.
      Specific essay training
Writing essays is a core component of our courses. We will show your child step by step which types of text he or she needs to master and how to best plan, phrase and revise them. Writing essays is a process that we coach individually and specifically. For that reason, your child will write essays on a regular basis – with the aim of imparting the joy of writing. After class hours, your child is always welcome to write additional essays on a voluntary basis. Naturally, we will provide feedback and valuable suggestions for improvement for those essays as well.
Personal learning assessment through intermediate tests
We place great emphasis on personal support and an individual focus. Our teachers identify the individual gaps of each student and help them address these gaps through individual coaching. Regular tests give you a constant overview of your child's progress and help your child to identify areas that require more time and effort.
Regular feedback between teachers and parents
We believe in transparency and openness. That is why we share our observations, both positive and negative, with you. We are also always happy to listen to your concerns. On the one hand, it is important to us to encourage your child to develop the independence required for the Gymnasium. On the other hand, we will also inform you in a transparent manner if we observe any difficulties.
Acquiring valuable learning and testing strategies
We provide your child with relevant learning and examination strategies: tips and tricks on the best learning environment, tips for exam nerves, what to do in case of blackouts, specific exercises to improve focus, as well as approaches to tasks typical for the Gymnasium entrance exam.
      Mock exam
During the course, we carry out and evaluate a mock exam based on a Gymnasium entrance exam. You will receive comprehensive feedback, in which we point out opportunities and difficulties and recommend exercises that are individually targeted to your child. Afterwards, we will discuss the exam in detail with the students and they will solve it together with their teacher.

      Frequent Questions
How does the current situation of COVID-19 affect the courses of Gymivorbereitung Zürich?
In all our courses we strictly adhere to the recommended distance and hygiene regulations of the BAG.

Regardless of the special situation, we want to accompany your child optimally on the way to Gymnasium. Should the situation in Zurich worsen again (e.g. lockdown), our courses will nevertheless be guaranteed to be held. We have the necessary infrastructure and experience to be able to offer all our courses in the form of distance learning if required.
How the online course (Distance Learning) works
You can find more information here.
What combinations of preparation courses do you recommended?
In principle, our courses are carefully coordinated and can be easily combined with each other. Depending on the individual situation, different combinations are possible – we will be happy to advise you personally.

Example 1: Preparation courses in 5th and 6th grade
In order to identify and close individual gaps at an early stage, we recommend that some students start our preparation course already in 5th grade (May to summer). From September onwards, students from 6th grade can then attend the six-month course. The two courses are optimally coordinated. This ensures a sustainable Gymnasium preparation, and your child can prepare for the exams comprehensively and without rushing.

Example 2: Six-month preparation course for 6th grade and specific supplementary intensive courses
In principle, we recommend attending the six-month preparation course in 6th grade. If a student needs additional help in specific areas in addition to the preparation course, our intensive courses offer ideal support. In our intensive courses, we cover topics that have not been fully understood yet. We can recap and specifically train those topics (e.g. mathematics, essay writing, etc.) or practice even more exam questions and mock exams during the sports holidays. This gives your child additional self-confidence.

Example 3: Attending a public preparation course at your child's school and specific intensive courses at Gymivorbereitung Zürich
If you are satisfied with your child's public preparation courses, we can supplement those with our intensive courses. This gives your child the chance to have topics explained by a different teacher. In this way, your child receives an independent assessment from our experts.

How long does a course day in the supplementary preparation course last?
In the past, we have received feedback that the course days for supplementary courses should not be too long. The Gymnasium preparation time is not only technically and personally demanding, but also highly time-intensive with a time frame of about half a year.

As confirmed by various studies, the time span in which students can focus their attention fully is only between 25 and 30 minutes on average. If the course days last too long, they will be less effective, the students will lose motivation, and their enthusiasm and homework will become an additional burden over the course of half a year.

That is why we intentionally focus on a dynamic teaching structure.

Characteristics of this approach are a high diversity of methods as well as targeted social forms and active support in obtaining interdisciplinary skills such as focus exercises and learning strategies.

Thanks to our many years of experience, we have found that the optimum for a course day during school is 1.5 hours.

However, a shorter course duration does not mean less material – far from it. Our aim is to ensure that the students in our courses can always focus optimally and that the courses are structured as efficiently as possible.

For example, the course hours are used to teach the material. We also want to be able to help to students individually. For instance, essays can be written at home without a teacher and sent to the teacher in advance. The teacher can prepare class with the corrected essays and can thus use the lesson to give comprehensive feedback and tips. They don't "watch" the students while they are writing essays – although this is, of course, an exam situation that we will practice separately. Similarly, your child can do more in-depth exercises at home once the basics have been covered in the course.

If they have any questions, the students can always ask the teacher directly in the chat. The questions will then be discussed in the course or in additional online video conferences and practiced with specific exercises and theory.

This not only promotes your child's independence, but also ensures that the contents of the exam are worked through sustainably and ultimately understood by the students.

What grade point average do we recommend so that passing the exam is realistic?
In order to be realistic about passing the Gymnasium exam, a certain grade point average should be reached in the canton of Zurich. In primary school, the grade point average for the subjects German and Maths should be at least 5.0. (e.g., 5.0 in German and 5.0 in Maths. Or 4.5 in German and 5.5 in Maths). If your child hasn't reached this grade point average (yet), we recommend that you choose a more intensive preparation program (e.g., start preparation already in 5th grade or attend additional intensive courses).
